On multiple occasions I have seen citizens defending their houses with all sorts of weapons, from AR-15 to AWM’s, which frankly I have found to be simply unrealistic. In which situation would a citizen get his hands on military grade rifle actively being used in the police force

I know the AWM part seems unrealistic for self defence in your home, but the AR-15 isn't. Now I don't know where you are from, but in America the AR-15 is pretty popular with civilian use. Myself and many others own them across the US, and keep them readily available. It isn't just for police use.

What Dan said. The AR-15 is a civilian model of the M16, so many citizens in the US own one. Like Dan and myself.

Well realistic the AWP is a rifle made for the police to use and not civil or army use there are other versions for them
so the AWP means in fact  "Arctic warfare police"

the one for the army is the AWM "Arctic warfare magnum"
