I've never had a problem with Security Essentials. I've found that AVG is a resource hog, while I can game and have a virus scan going with Security Essentials.

inside avg you can set it as "low, medium, high performance" so that is pretty good, if you don't game you set tohigh to get it fast done, while if you game you set it to low.
