I don't really see how that has anything to do with his statement. He was talking about fuel consumption being ridiculous in his view, not about fuel being like hard to get or anything.

I see, although, if I'm going to be picky. I wouldn't call a bog-standard factory-new Lamborghini Murcielago a hypercar. Hypercars are the McLaren P1, Porsche 918 etc. The Lamborghini Murcielago is a supercar. But still, I'm a petrol head and I'm being picky.
