Nothern Ireland - Belfast
#11
According to everyone Ive met thats around my age, their generation just doesn't care.

Only day it might turn ugly is on 12th of July. Other then that, its no more dangerous then any other big cities, I would guess.
Everyone I've met so far is really nice, and I love the city so far. If this job goes well, I might stay here for a year or 10.
Might even be permanent, who knows. Oh. And the jokes about Northern Ireland having a pub on every corner is actually true.
The streets are lined as: Pub, fast food joint, restaurant, shop, pub. My hotell is right next to a Pub. In a radius of 500 meters,
Ive seen 4 fast food joints, 5 bars, a couple of restaurant, tesco and a cinema called "Movie house".

The IRA conflict has ended now(thank god). I live in the Republic so I don't know much about the north (I have visited it a good times, though), it is part of the UK so it does use the UK phone networks, school system, currency, TV/Radio stations etc. Antares has given you some really good advice on shopping and networks, I recommend you follow them (Northern Ireland is actually very similar to England). Also beware that if you leave the north to the republic, your phone network will change and Euro is used. etc. Here are some web tips for living in the North ;P:

Also remember that the North is in the Irish Province of Ulster.

The north also has some nice attractions like W5 and the area were the Titanic was built, as well as the Titanic Museum. There are also plenty of beautiful outdoor attractions (This is Ireland :3) (http://www.outdoorni.com/)

As Antares also said, in my opinion the best quality (Irish grown) food and meat is sold in M&S.

Also the Royal Norwegian Embassy is in Dublin, ROI - (http://www.norway.ie/). If you have any travel problems etc, like need a new passport. I recommend you go there (Its quite a trip though)

As for the phone contract, go GifGaf if you want pay as you go, or if you want a contract, go Three. They do a good deal on unlimited internet. ASDA is also a good place to shop, it's pretty cheap but if you want quality go Sainsburys, it'll cost slightly more but tastes far better in my opinion.
Kind Regards,
Wood.

I visit The North of Ireland several times a year. 12th of July I recommend you stay in doors. At Easter avoid west Belfast. As you won't get moving at all. In terms of food if your gonna shop and have a Tesco near you I advise you sign up for a Tesco clubcard soon. You get money back, savings on fuel etc. ermmmmm avoid nandos....unless you are a 15-25 year old wannabe hipster, then that's your scene. Cosmo is a retry good place to eat, normally have to book in advance. If the bar has a Union Jack or a tri Color on it. You'll probably want to avoid them as its most likely not your crowd. Avoid the Shankhill road like the plague. KFC in the city centre is crap and always takes forever, true story, don't go wandering about at night if you are unfamiliar with the areas.

That's the best advice I can give. Will be over in March, I trust you'll be buying me a McDonalds lol Tounge enjoy your stay. The night life is crazy. And the accent is damn near impossible to understand at times.

Alryt m8, welcome to Belfast!

I'm from here but in a sense new to the place as well since I just moved back after 4 years in London so I've been discovering/rediscovering a lot of things. In terms of shopping tescos is probably your best bet. In terms of nights out there's plenty on offer. Lavery's is a popular spot and it's got a pub but also turns into a bit of a club later in the night. There's a new club called Alibi which i've been to a few times and is a good laugh although it's more expensive than say Lavery's. If you want to die/get vomited on/pull a gypsy there's this place called Thompsons. It's sort of where people go at 2am when they want to keep partying. I can't truthfully say it isn't fun, but as I said... you might die. If you fancy a really good cocktail I'd recommend The Albany on the Lisburn road. It's exceptional. Apart from those places I've listed, the Queen's Student Union is really good for a few beers (it's cheap) and Filthy McNasty's (on the Dublin Road) is immensely popular.

As for food, the most infamous place in Belfast atm is 'Boojum'. I'd recommend trying their fajitas. Very tasty but I think the place is overrated. If you've any other questions about Belfast feel free to message me.

Quote:There's a Tesco on the other side of the road. I've fallen in love with that store when I saw the Smirnoff Vodka is 14 pounds and
two 1.75 l coke bottles are "2 for 2 pounds".

Welcome to... not Norway
