You don't need or not need a role to help others. Helping others comes as a part of being in a community.
Teachers act more as role models on how to play rather than are solely to help people in my opinion.
It's good to have people that are literally obliged to help people as that is the role that they have personally volunteered for. They have volunteered to be a person that can give advice, tips and help to new players.
It's just a friendly symbol that new players can instantly identify so they don't have to type a message in OOC and wait ages for a reply or even be trolled by some community members. This wouldn't happen in /help. It's just purely a serious helpline.
It also separates constant "How do you do this..." "How do you do that..." messages from constantly being spammed in OOC. All of these requests instead go to experienced players that will always reply seriously, as that is their volunteered job. Furthermore, when there is no teachers online, that's when new players can use OOC. But there's usually teachers on.
I don't understand why people view teacher so negatively, it literally has no down sides. None.
The only argument you have is that "Anybody can help people". Although that is true, it's good that we have volunteers that dedicate themselves to help people rather than just hoping that community members are willing to help. Which is often unlikely.
And no, people won't help regardless of rank. Being a teacher (from experience) you feel obliged to help people; because that's what you signed up for. Being a member is different, you haven't applied for a role that allows you to help people easier, so you feel less obliged to help.
It's not all about helping people anyway, as i said before, they're also role models and experienced players that can give RPP when there's role plays going on. This is extremely helpful especially when staff aren't on to recognize good roleplay and award it.
Teacher is an extremely helpful role. Removing it would be a mistake. There is so much positives to having it as opposed to removing it.
