I have heard many people use the term 'bump' or 'to bump a thread' can someone explain to me what this means/ how to do it? thanks in advance.

The threads on the top are the threads with the most recent reply.
When "bumping" you make a post, making your thread higher on the page, resulting in more people seeing it.
