On multiple occasions I have seen citizens defending their houses with all sorts of weapons, from AR-15 to AWM’s, which frankly I have found to be simply unrealistic. In which situation would a citizen get his hands on military grade rifle actively being used in the police force

I know the AWM part seems unrealistic for self defence in your home, but the AR-15 isn't. Now I don't know where you are from, but in America the AR-15 is pretty popular with civilian use. Myself and many others own them across the US, and keep them readily available. It isn't just for police use.

What Dan said. The AR-15 is a civilian model of the M16, so many citizens in the US own one. Like Dan and myself.
