You even said it yourself. You manufactured the ammunition to defend yourself. You were not in a position to buy the ammo. If I was a doctor and was shot, I couldn't just manufacture health kits and heal myself there and then. You can buy the ammo to sell on later but you cannot manufacture items during a situation because you didn't have any.
