I have fixed it!
However, it wasn't the material issue.
In the addons folder I created a folder called flcontent and moved the materials, sound, setting and models into there instead of having it all in the addons folder. In the original flcontent download, these files were not in a folder named "flcontent" and hence everything in it was useless as the game did not have the correct file path.
So the folders called materials, sound settings and models MUST have a folder parent called "flcontent"
