I'm sorry, but you don't need a f*cking automatic weapon to 'protect your home from the evil government'.
Why shouldn't I have one?
In fact it would be useless, it wouldn't harm them at all, they could just bring out the missiles, high-flying planes, tanks, etcetera.
So we would fair better with Semi-Autos/Hunting Rifles/Handguns?
Which means that if they're useless for 'protection from the evil government' what are they used for?
Entertainment? Understanding the mechanics of a firearm? Waging Guerilla Warfare and causing the government the lose the hearts and minds of the people?
Why the hell should any one individual need four assault rifles and a few thousand rounds of ammunition?
I've got roughly 1000 Rounds of 8mm Mauser Rifle for my Gewehr 98. Also... Why shouldn't they own an automatic weapon?
Yes, guns are just tools and people are people, but said tools are specifically designed to injure or kill a person, and in the case of the assault rifles, many people.
And as any other tool they are easy to produce and manufacture. I still don't understand your fear for firearms.
The problem with the USA is that they legalized them in the first place, so now the unarmed civilians felt insecure and threatened by all of the heavily armed civilians (I class even a pistol as heavily armed, you can kill a lot of people with one very easily), so they too purchased weapons and the viscious cycle continues.
Vicious would imply that people are going around killing each other constantly, when in fact the UK has higher violent crimes per captia then the United States.
Now the civilians of the USA will refuse to disarm, but won't admit that it's because they're scared of other people with guns because that'd undermine their own argument, but instead spout out the second amendment and claim the government is too powerful.
I won't disarm because I'm afraid? What kind of logic is that? I refuse to disarm because I choose to own firearms for several different reasons. Most of which relate to hunting, recreational shooting, and sport shooting. The only gun which could be considered for self-defense would be my Makarov PM, which I was given for free so I would rather not complain.
Maybe, but what will you do without them?
We form a transitional government?
Live in tribes with no centralized power, transport, economic, justice, building, maintenance, education, medical system?
Go through a rough period of transition for a few months and get back with a newly formed government.
Sure, let me know how that goes. I'm not saying I specifically support the people in charge or their current ideals but every aspect of your life, including typing your awful arugments on your computer, are possible thanks to a centralized government system.
You can also thank the same centralized government for allowing firearms to be legalized. GG.

As for the argument about criminals having guns, true, they may do, but it's only because as of now it's easy to get them. Look at the UK - We have a lot of criminals floating about, but very very few have access to a firearm, let alone anything more than a handgun. Whereas in the USA it's incredibly easy to get a weapon, so of course they're all armed.
Yet most of them just switch over to long bladed knives which are also illegal. So now the law-abiding populace is weakened to having no tools while the ones which are illegally using tools become more destructive.

I just don't see the obsession with owning firearms.
Have you ever fired a firearm? It's pretty fun.
If you were all up for 'self defence of your property and family' you would go for a non-lethal weapon if there was such a thing available.
So I take some pepper spray and spray a robber with it. He's blind for a few seconds, and then turns around and starts stabbing me. Flawless.
Unfortunately, due to US gun culture, this is not the case and people feel they need automatic rifles(Hughes Amendment has stopped the production of automatic firearms since the late 80's. I wish I could own an automatic firearm, but sadly it'll take me a year and $20,000 to purchase one.) that can hold a a huge amount of ammunition(And can also be horridly inaccurate and cubersome thanks to the Hi-Cap Magazine. They are also for susceptible to jamming.). I'm not sure why you need 30 rounds(Standard Magazine size) plus twentry extra magazines(Sport Shooting) to fight off that one cat burglar.
Does it feel empowering knowing you can so easily end so many lives?
No not really. It just gives me a greater respect of an inanimate object.
