Protect your PC

Latest DoS attack was by an member of Fearless, which probably got exploited/hacked in some way, because he didn't have any firewall. He thought he was protected by the standard Windows Firewall. He became a so called zombie of an hacker, a computer used for attacking servers without the owner noticing it. If you don't believe it, he had a virus called Hack.tool.Oylecann.exe, which is according to microsoft.com: "HackTool:Win32/Oylecann.A is a tool that may be used to send a flood of network packets, like TCP, UDP and HTTP, to a designated target." Please protect your PC for your own security and for the server.

Step 1: Protecting your PC is easy and even free nowadays. Start with installing one of these firewalls, this could be:

- Microsoft Security Essentials (You need a legit Windows XP, Vista or 7 OS)
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-SG/windo...essentials

- Avg
http://free.avg.com

- Avast
http://www.avast.com

Step 2: I also recommend to do a full scan with my favorite scanner called Malwarebytes. Here you can download it: http://www.malwarebytes.org
It finds malware others firewalls won't find.

Done, your PC is a lot more secure now.

Anti-viruses might protect you, but in most cases the virus is new and it's undetectable.

Therefore I will list a few advices.
  • Never visit websites that you don't know. (There are exploits that downloads files to your computer without you even knowing)
  • Only allow java on trusted websites. (Most common hackers will use java exploit to infect you with his/her virus)
  • Never download files which you don't what is. (Even your friends could be infected, which might send you a link on MSN or such)
  • Always download the desired program on it's official website. (Some people might copy i.e steam and make the website look legit)
  • Scan your computer at least once every 6th month. (This really depends on how much you download and how many websites you visit)
  • As mentioned in above post, download Malwarebytes and do a full scan. http://www.malwarebytes.org/
  • Be aware of who's your friend and who's not, many hackers do even affect their "friends".

I will update this list as much as possible.

When it comes to Firewalls, as Soul said, there are many free options, but in my opinion, Microsoft Security Essentials sucks, I would suggest any other firewall but that, and from what I have heard in reviews, AVG is nothing compared to Avast
As dottech.org said:
Quote:Now, what program you should use comes down to your specific needs and desires. Want the most features? avast! Free is the way to go. Are you looking for the best detection rates and don't care about anything else? Avira Free is for you. Want a simple anti-malware program that provides great protection without nagging ads? Microsoft Security Essentials beckons you. Worried about network security? Microsoft Security Essentials' "Network Inspection System" may serve you well. Are you a social network addict? Go with AVG Free for it has "Social Network Protection". Hate false positives? Avoid AVG and consider Microsoft Security Essentials. Dislike slow scan times? Don't get Microsoft Security Essentials. Surf the web a lot, besides your frequent websites? avast! Free's "Web Shield" provides better specialized protection in that area than the other three programs. Download lots of software? avast! Free's "Auto Sandbox" may be your next best friend.

I would defenetly recommend the free Avast Anti-Virus if you have to choose one from above.

An anti-virus doesn't always detect malware. If you download tools, ect. I recommend you upload a virus scan on virus total, if the file turns out as infected after a week, then don't use it, or do a full malwarebytes scan.

Oh yes, Malwarebytes is by far the best anti-malware tool, IMO. It also has a Firewall, if you have the full version. (there's a free trial)

I'm using COMODO internet security, Its a Antivirus and firewall.
